"Nick", Acyrlic, 14 x 11 in.

I usually paint in oils but I've been experimenting with acrylics for the portrait sketches I do in our local portrait group. This was a 40 minute pose.

Cream Pitcher with Red Grapes

Oil on panel, 8 x 8 in.
This painting sold during the Open Studios Tour to a customer from Paradise, California. As you may have heard, most of the residents of Paradise lost their homes in the devastating Camp Fire. Unfortunately, I don't have the contact info for this customer but if you're out there and you read this, please contact me, I would like to provide you with a replacement painting, no charge. May you once again have a wall of your own to hang it on. :)

Arrangement in Red and Green

Oil on panel, 8 x 8 in.
The person who bought this painting said it reminded her of those old-fashioned striped bathing suits you would see on men in old photographs. I love that image and now I think of it whenever I look at a picture of this painting.

Sailing the Crystal Sea

Oil on cradled panel, 14 x 11 in.
I found this slice of butternut squash at the Farmer's Market. I liked the U-shape which reminded me of an old-fashioned ship sailing through an imaginary landscape. I love the poem "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod" by Eugene Fields which tells the tale of three fishermen who sailed off in a wooden shoe on a river of crystal light into the sea of dew, and that's what inspired the title.

Turban Squash

Oil on cradled panel, 12 x 12 in.
I took a painting class once that emphasized color matching. I ultimately decided that method wasn't for me but I did use it for this painting. I found it helpful in getting all the color and value changes represented in the patterns on the squash.

Requiem for a Bear

Bear Skull, 9 x 12 in.

An artist friend of mine borrowed this bear skull from his neighbor to use in a painting and then lent it to me. We were told the bear was hit by a car. I found myself thinking about the bear while painting it, wondering about it's life and death and hoping I did it some justice with my painting.

What appealed to me most in the set up for this one was the reflected light on the underside of the bananas and I tried to capture that in the finished painting.
